Missed calls are missed jobs
Vendors in this space frame the problem the same way: the caller with a burst pipe or a dead furnace does not leave a voicemail.
- Rosie states that 80% of people won't leave a message, especially when dealing with an urgent leak or clogged drain.
- Dialzara's home-services page says general contractors miss calls because they're on job sites, and that homeowners requesting estimates call during the busiest hours.
- Smith.ai describes a 10 PM no-heat call missed for 45 minutes, with the customer hiring a competitor who dispatched immediately.
- Goodcall's HVAC page says most HVAC companies lose customers to an unanswered phone call at the wrong moment, not over bad service.
We can't verify those claims independently. They're vendor statements. But the mechanic is real: if nobody answers, the caller dials the next result on Google. An AI receptionist exists to make sure someone always answers.
Which AI receptionists name your trade?
Not every tool publishes a home-services page. This table lists only what each vendor states: the trades named, what they say about dispatch or emergency handling, and the entry price.
| Vendor | Trades named | Dispatch/emergency handling stated | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodcall | Plumbing; HVAC page published | Triage emergencies, capture dispatch-ready info (name, address, system type) before handoff | $79 a month |
| Upfirst | Contractors, HVAC | Warm transfers: agent tells you who's calling and what they need | $24.95/month |
| Ruby | Home services; roofers, plumbers, HVAC, landscapers, contractors | Live human receptionists connect callers per your preferences | $250/month |
| Avoca | HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, pest control, garage door, restoration, movers | Emergency escalation shown in product demo; books jobs into ServiceTitan | Custom quote |
| Dialzara | Home-services/contractor page published | Escalation rules for complex calls; warm transfer on Pro and above | $29/month |
| Rosie | Home services, plumbing, HVAC, construction | Waterfall transfers try multiple numbers until someone answers (Growth plan) | $49/month |
| Smith.ai | Home services, general contractors; HVAC, plumbing, electrical named | AI answers first; complex calls can transfer to live receptionists as a per-call add-on | $150/mo (free plan exists) |
Avoca is the most trade-specific: it calls itself an AI front office for home service businesses and lists ten trades. Ruby is the outlier on staffing: it uses live human receptionists supported by AI tools, not a fully automated agent.
What does an AI receptionist for home services cost at 100 and 300 calls?
We modeled each vendor's published pricing at 100 and 300 calls a month, assuming a 3-minute average call. These are estimates from rate cards, not quotes. Overage rules differ, and some vendors don't publish one.
| Vendor | 100 calls/mo | 300 calls/mo | Billing basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | $69.95 (Premium) | $159.95 (Pro) | Per call; spam and calls under 15 seconds not billed |
| Goodcall | $79 (Starter) | $129 (Growth) | Per unique caller; we assume worst case, every call a new caller |
| Dialzara | $135 (Business Pro) | $349 (Business Elite) | Per minute after included bucket |
| Rosie | $149 (Scale) | $149 (Scale) | Per minute; overage rate not published |
| Smith.ai | $200 (Pro, modeled at $2.00/call) | $500 (Enterprise) | Per call |
| Ruby | $720 (500-minute plan) | Over plan; rate not published | Per receptionist minute, live humans |
| Avoca | Custom quote | Custom quote | Not published |
Three things to note. Goodcall bills unique callers, not calls, so repeat customers in the same month cost nothing extra. Smith.ai's $150 Pro plan works out to roughly 75 calls at $2.00/call; we model beyond that at the same rate. Ruby's 500 minutes covers about 166 three-minute calls, and Ruby does not state what happens past the cap.

After-hours emergency routing: what to check
A no-heat call at 10 PM needs a different path than a quote request at 2 PM. Before you buy, confirm these in the product, not the sales deck.
- Urgency triage. Goodcall's HVAC page describes separating a no-heat emergency from a routine filter request using predefined urgency criteria. Ask any vendor how the agent decides what counts as an emergency and who writes those rules.
- Transfer behavior. Upfirst does warm transfers, telling you who's calling before you commit. Dialzara's entry plan only does blind transfer; warm transfer starts at $99/month (Dialzara pricing). Rosie's waterfall transfers, trying multiple numbers until someone answers, require the $299 Growth plan (Rosie pricing).
- Backup if you don't pick up. Goodcall states transfers go to the right person with a backup if they don't pick up. Ask every vendor what happens when the on-call tech doesn't answer.
- Human fallback. Smith.ai can escalate complex calls to live North America-based receptionists as a per-call add-on. Ruby is human by default. Fully automated tools like Avoca mention human-in-the-loop deployment in customer stories.
- What gets captured before handoff. Goodcall describes collecting name, address, system type and problem details to reduce dispatch time. That's the minimum your on-call tech needs.
Our guide on how to test an AI receptionist has a call script you can use for these scenarios.
Booking, dispatch software and integrations
Answering the call is half the job. The other half is getting the booking into your calendar or CRM.
- Avoca is the only vendor here that names ServiceTitan, plus Google LSA. It syncs booked jobs to your CRM. If you run ServiceTitan, that's the shortest path, but pricing is quote-only.
- Upfirst books directly into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity Scheduling, Square and Clio Manage while the caller is on the line.
- Goodcall checks your calendar, offers times, books and texts everyone the details. Integrations include Google Calendar, HighLevel, Zapier and an API. Plans cap external tools: 1 on Starter, 5 on Growth, 15 on Scale.
- Dialzara syncs with Google and Outlook calendars and connects through Zapier and Make.
- Rosie books directly on your calendar from the $149 Scale plan up; the $49 Professional plan only texts appointment links. Integrations beyond Zapier and Google Business Profile are not listed.
- Smith.ai includes AI Scheduling on every plan, with Calendly plus Salesforce, HubSpot and Clio integrations.
- Ruby receptionists can schedule appointments on all plans at no extra cost, but the text names no specific integration partners despite claiming 5,000+.
If your whole operation runs on field-service software, confirm the integration exists before anything else.
